PALAWAN – “Connect everybody to everybody.”
This was the vision of Secretary Gregorio Honasan II as he assumed office at the Department of Information and Communications Technology last July.
It is in the continuing pursuit of a connected Philippines that 184 inhabitants of the remote island of Pag-asa situated in the Kalayaan Group of Islands, Palawan can now enjoy free Internet access through the DICT’s Free Wi-Fi for All program.
From having to purchase cellular load daily just to go online, LGU officials and residents of the 37.2-hectare island west of Puerto Princesa City are now able to use the Internet in looking for alternative opportunities for livelihood and education through Free Wi-Fi for All.
Ana Rhea Bania, Officer-in-Charge for Tourism at the Municipal Office of Kalayaan, was among those who were very appreciative of the Program’s presence in the island.
“Malaking tulong para sa amin ang libreng Wi-Fi na ito, kita ninyo naman sa sitwasyon namin dito sa Kalayaan dahil isolated ang aming lugar. Malaking tipid ito dahil nagbabayad pa kami ng halos 300 pesos kada araw na umaabot ng 9,000 kada buwan para lang maka konekta sa Internet na madalas ay mabagal at pawala-wala.” she said.
(Free Wi-Fi is a huge help for us, given our situation here at Kalayaan, how isolated it is. We get to save a lot since we used to pay almost 300 pesos everyday, adding up to around 9,000 pesos monthly, just so we can connect to Internet that is slow and unstable.)
Free Wi-Fi for All is available at the Municipal Plaza of Kalayaan and the Kalayaan Town Hall.
