With the number of those infected with the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the Philippines now running in the thousands, the government is taking measures to prevent even further spread through a more streamlined process of testing suspected cases of COVID-19.
It is with this objective in mind that several hospitals and research institutions have been accredited by the Research Institute of Tropical Medicine (RITM), the country’s dedicated research facility for infectious and tropical diseases, as subnational testing centers. Responding to this call to more drastic action, other private and public hospitals and laboratories have expressed their interest to conduct tests across the country as well. These institutions are now undergoing the Laboratory Accreditation Steps spearheaded by the Department of Health (DOH).
A number of RITM-accredited public health facilities that administer COVID-19 testing already have existing free Internet connectivity services provided by the DICT’s Free Wi-Fi for All Program.
- Research Institute for Tropical Medicine – Muntinlupa City
- San Lazaro Hospital – City of Manila
- Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center – Cebu City
- Lung Center of the Philippines – Quezon City
- Western Visayas Medical Center – Iloilo City
- Southern Philippines Medical Center – Davao City
Bolstering the testing of suspected patients in greater numbers is aid in the form of ICT, which shall allow the swift gathering of data and exchange of vital information. Frontliners in these locations can also use free Wi-Fi services to connect with their loved ones during their breaks to let them know that they are alright.
Filipinos may expect the DICT, through the Free Wi-Fi for All Program, to be nothing but steadfast in providing connectivity amidst isolation to accredited COVID-19 testing centers moving forward in this time of uncertainty.
